Britain blocks attempt to arrest Israel's Livni
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain blocked an attempt on Thursday to arrest visiting Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni for alleged war crimes, officials said.
Livni, foreign minister during Israel's three-week assault on the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip launched in December 2008, is the first senior Israeli figure to visit Britain since the government changed a war crimes law that had kept her and some other Israeli officials away for fear of arrest.
Her centrist Kadima party said she was in Britain at the invitation of Foreign Secretary William Hague.
A Palestinian civilian, who maintains Livni is responsible for war crimes allegedly committed by Israel during the Gaza offensive, asked Britain's top prosecutor to allow an application be made for an arrest warrant for Livni, according to lawyers representing the unnamed Palestinian.
The Crown Prosecution Service said prosecutors had not taken a decision on the request when the government intervened, informing them that Livni was on a "special mission" to Britain, effectively granting her immunity from prosecution.
As a result, Britain's top prosecutor, Keir Starmer, refused to allow an application to court for an arrest warrant against Livni.
Britain last month introduced a new law limiting citizens' rights to seek the arrest of foreign politicians for alleged war crimes committed anywhere in the world.
Israel had urged Britain to change the law in 2009 after there were reports that Livni would have risked arrest on war crimes charges stemming from the Gaza offensive if she had not cancelled a visit.
Under the old law, private citizens could start criminal prosecutions in such cases by applying to a magistrate for an arrest warrant. The new law requires the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions before a warrant can be issued.
However, lawyers for the Palestinian plaintiff said it was not the change in the law that spared Livni from arrest but the government's issue of a certificate of diplomatic immunity.
"Access to justice has been denied in the name of political expediency," a statement from lawyers for the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights and the London law firm Hickman & Rose said.
Livni told the BBC the British legal system should not be "abused by those that are trying in the most cynical way to take leaders and officers and soldiers who are fighting against terror ... and to change their position into war criminals."
In a statement issued after talks with Livni on the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Hague said it was "an appalling situation when political abuse of our legal procedures prevented people like Mrs Livni from travelling legitimately to the UK."
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign organised a protest against Livni's visit, saying the British government "must arrest war criminals, not invite them to London."

Call of Duty need a Zombie Banker map I think.
No Bonuses For Goldman?
GOLDMAN Sachs is planning to slash bonuses to almost zero amid growing expectations that the Wall Street bank is about to slide into the red for only the second time in its history.
The market meltdown that began in August has hammered the revenues of all the big global investment banks.
Analysts have been slashing their forecasts for Goldman's third-quarter results, due on October 18, with most now expecting it to report a loss.
Morgan Stanley, its closest rival, could also fall into the red.
Goldman's senior executives are determined to prove that the bank can continue to generate bigger returns for shareholders, despite the market turmoil.
They have made an internal commitment to ensure that no more than 35 per cent to 45 per cent of its revenue is paid to staff -- a lower proportion than any other Wall Street bank. The ratio of staff pay to turnover is the key metric used by analysts to determine the efficiency of an investment bank.
Cutting bonuses to the bone is one of the few tools that Goldman can use to keep the ratio under control. It has already cut salaries for its London partners and is also cutting thousands of jobs.
However, its third-quarter revenues are expected to have fallen by about half compared with the second quarter, putting the ratio under pressure.
New accounting rules forcing banks to defer bonus payments add to the strain. Deferred bonuses awarded last year or the year before, when market conditions were more buoyant, hit the bottom line as the bankers receive the cash.
Banks that went on a hiring spree following the financial crisis, hoping to cash in on the demise of rivals like Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers, have less flexibility on pay.
Big salaries were offered to tempt bankers to join firms such as Nomura and Barclays Capital, meaning they are now lumbered with higher fixed costs.
Huw van Steenis, a banking analyst at Morgan Stanley, said third-quarter results would be "ugly" for Wall Street.
"On average, we assume fixed-income trading will be down 45 per cent on Q2 and equity trading down 15 per cent.
"Underwriting and merger and acquisition volumes are also down in a big way."

Universal Soldier
He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four,
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen,
Been a soldier for a thousand years.
He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn't kill,
And he knows he always will,
Kill you for me my friend and me for you.
And he's fighting for Canada,
He's fighting for France,
He's fighting for the USA,
And he's fighting for the Russians,
And he's fighting for Japan,
And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.
And he's fighting for Democracy,
He's fighting for the Reds,
He says it's for the peace of all.
He's the one who must decide,
Who's to live and who's to die,
And he never sees the writing on the wall.
But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone,
He's the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war,
And without him all this killing can't go on.
He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
And brothers can't you see,
This is not the way we put the end to war.
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen,

Newport- Nearly Not A Police State
We were filming in Newport yesterday on a public road and no police bothered us at all. They would get pretty close and then go down a side street or into Boots to check on the razors I assume.
Somebody came out of RBS to ask what we were doing and we told them making a music video and they went away happy. We were talking about this on the way back to the car and just as we got back out popped Little Miss Hitler with (totally cool dude may I add) PSCO sidekick (interesting that is, how to get what looks like two real police on patrol but pay for one and a half) to ask us what we've been doing as CCTV after TWO hours had noticed us.
So we told them we were filming a music video in a public place. They informed us we needed permission to film in a public place blah blah blah asked for our id.
Miss Hitler was quite happy to take away personal freedoms and arrest us because 3,000 people died in New York and it didn't take her long to tell us this. I mentioned that the IRA bombed mainland Britain all the time but we as a people got on with it and freedom was kept because that's more important than giving in to terror. Being from Ireland they were harder to spot too not being dark skinned with beards etc.
This flew over her head like a predator drone.
She liked my camera equipment and kept commenting on how expensive it was. Being a enforcer drone for our consumer society it must be one of the only things that registers, even though it's all second hand off ebay Miss Hitler could still discern quality, gotta respect that. I was tempted to say I bought it all with my sickness benefit.
She asked where the video camera was looking at the dslr on it's stabiliser. "We were taking pictures, it's a camera".
"I thought you said you were filming?"
That noodle her head bigtime, all she could see was a camera, much like all she can see is terror. No errors in official stories, no big financial scam cover up, nothing. All she sees is what she's been told. I take it that nobody has told her that dslrs can take moving pictures.
As I am not obliged to answer her questions I did not shed any further light on the subject.
She even wrote the name of the band down which was a new one. Cool. We now have a file at Newport Central Terror Police Hub.
It got me thinking though. We need a press pack to give to the uninformed as they didn't know what a zombie bank was. I bet she loved the death squad bit. We are a non-agressive awarness propaganda programme. We are not into what we see, we may mention it. We are a reflection of a reality. The dude did ask us if we were extreme!
Extreme and knarly dude :D
We love the police and must work on connecting with the ones with terror in their eyes. We always end up having this terror conversation. I think we should agree with them and get back to talking about zombie banks.
Newport is still really cool though. Safe Clarts.

AUDIT RBS
Audit RBS Campaign
I want to know exactly what RBS's debts and its assets are, I want to know who they owe money to and what the agreements say. Same goes for loans made by the bank. Who, what terms, how much and I want to hear from the people who made the deals.
Of course one major fear would be that if the truth about RBS's assets were known and priced this would effectively price not only the assets and liabilities of all the counter-parties to the RBS deals but also those who held or made similar deals.
My argument there is - "What, we can't know what we are liable for and what we are paying for, because it might harm someone else entirely, someone I don't know, and with whom I have no agreement? I don't think so. It's nothing personal you understand, it just business."
I personally, as a tax payer, was taken into a vastly costly deal blindfolded. I want the blind fold removed. Don't tell me 'experts' have looked at it for me. I do not believe those 'experts' have any concern for me or mine. I think they are working for interests other than mine and I do not think their opinions are worth anything to me.
We own the vast majority of RBS. I think the only reason we don't own it all is because if we did it would be liable to Freedom of Information Requests. But nevertheless we own it and we therefore have both a moraal and legal right to konw what it is we were forced in to buying and also forced into insuring. We have a right to demand a publicly conducted Debt Commission.

Two Wolves
A tribal elder was telling his grandson about the battle the old man was waging within himself. He said,
“It is between two wolves, my son. One is an evil wolf: anger, envy, sorrow, greed, self-pity, guilt, resentment, lies, false pride, superiority and ego. The other is the good wolf: joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
The boy took this in for a few minutes and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf won?”
The old Cherokee replied simply, “The one I feed.”
From a commemt by Mike on Ricks Picks.
